NORTH BERWICK — Police here say the man who died when he stepped onto the railroad tracks in front of a moving train Saturday evening committed suicide.
Christopher Sprague was 27 years old, and was the second man in as many months to take his own life by stepping in front of the Amtrak Downeaster as it made its way from Boston to Maine.
“It was a deliberate act,” said North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley on Monday.
The police chief said he had no information on whether Sprague, who lived on High Street, had previously been despondent.
The Amtrak Downeaster, carrying about 100 passengers, struck Sprague around 7 p.m. Saturday near the Route 9 overpass. An Amtrak spokeswoman said that the collision occurred on a section of track where there is no crossing, and the maximum speed for the train would be 60 mph.
Back on July 23, Paul Voisine of Mill Lane died when he, too, stepped in front of the train on Main Street adjacent to Town Pizza. Voisine had expressed his intentions in a Facebook posting.
