YARMOUTH

Pine Tree Academy boys basketball coach Trevor Schlisner ran through varying degrees of emotions during Tuesday’s basketball game with North Yarmouth Academy.

First, he watched his team miss all 10 of its shots in the first quarter, nearly shut out except for a pair of free throws with 1.2-seconds left on the clock.

Then, like switching on a light switch, the Breakers ran off 26 points in the second quarter.

In the end, it wasn’t enough for Schlisner’s squad, which dropped a 61-50 decision to the Panthers.

NYA (1-4) won the rebounding battle, hitting the glass for 43 boards, including 19 by Te’Andre King, who also had a team-high 25 points for the Panthers. And, fouls were a problem for the Breakers, with Evan Owen and Jared Tamalea’a both fouling out in the fourth quarter, allowing the Panthers to pull away.

“Te’Andre’s second- and third-chance points were the difference,” said Schlisner, whose Breakers host Vinalhaven tonight (7:30 p.m.) and Thursday (10:30 a.m.). “We weren’t boxing him out. Then we picked up a lot of fouls.”

“We knew that we had to keep hitting our shots and not take bad fouls, which I did. We can’t do anything once we foul out,” said Tamalea’a, who led the Breakers with a game-high 26 points.

Bad start

NYA came out quickly, jumping out to a 9-0 lead four minutes in. Schlisner called a pair of timeouts while attempting to shake his Breakers out of their slow start.

Nothing seemed to work as the Panthers’ lead grew to 14-0, with King scoring six points and Chris Hamblett adding five. NYA outrebounded PTA, 9-2 in the opening quarter.

“It was probably the worst quarter of my coaching career,” said Schlisner after watching his Breakers commit 10 turnovers in the opening eight minutes.

Right out of the gate in the second quarter, the Breakers turned things around. Tamalea’a hit a pair of field goals, and Alex Schlisner found his range for a bucket to get the Breakers to 18-8.

However, Tamalea’a joined Owen on the bench with three fouls, and NYA used a quick 5-0 run for a 23- 8 lead.

Suddenly the Breakers found their game. Alex Schlisner completed a three- point play and took turns with Tamalea’a in scoring points.

“We played more of our style of helter-skelter basketball in the second quarter. We took advantage of NYA’s issues with ball handling in the second quarter,” said the PTA coach.

Down 26-20, PTA closed the half on a sudden, 31- second 8- 0 run, with Tamalea’a tying the game with a trey and Alex Schlisner hitting a fall-away jumper at the buzzer to put the Breakers unbelievably ahead at the break, 28-26.

“It was our defense, our hustle, and we were hitting our shots in the second quarter,” said Tamalea’a, who had 19 points at the half.

The Panthers returned to their rebounding game in the third quarter. King scored 12 straight points for NYA and pulled down six boards. Leading 40-37, Hamblett scored twice on drives to the basket as the Panthers carried a 47- 41 advantage to the fourth quarter.

Alex Schlisner hit his third 3-pointer to open the final frame, but Hamblett scored 12 fourth- quarter points after Tamalea’a and Owen fouled out for the Breakers.

“We had one good quarter,” said Trevor Schlisner.

Alex Schlisner finished with 20 points, six steals and three assists for PTA, while Levi Miongo matched Tamalea’a with eight rebounds. Tamalea’a also had five steals, while Chris Amisi picked up five boards and three steals.

Connor Dillon had 10 rebounds, five assists and five points for the Panthers, while Hamblett finished with 21 points and three steals.

NYA shot 54 percent (24- of- 44) from the field and made 12-of-23 at the free-throw line. PTA was 18-of- 66 from the floor (27 percent) and 8- of- 16 at the charity stripe. The Breakers forced 33 turnovers while committing 25.
