PHIPPSBURG
Phippsburg selectmen have voted to set the dates for the 2018 annual town meeting for May 14-16.
Election day — when residents will elect town officials and vote on any secret ballot items that are prepared for the warrant in the coming months — will take place Monday, May 14. The remainder of town meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 15, and, if needed, continue the next day.
Last year, town meeting began May 1. The selectmen opted to push the date of the meeting back this year so they would have more firm budget numbers from RSU 1 before going into town meeting.
“Usually around April, they have (their proposed budget),” said Selectmen Chairwoman Julia House. “But then they have hearings, and they cut some.
“They have a more firm number the first of May,” she added. “And then it will get voted on at the town meeting and then the validation.”
While the selectmen were motivated to give the school district time to develop firm budget numbers, they were reluctant to push the annual town meeting too close to Memorial Day weekend.
House’s term will expire in 2018, as will that of Road Commissioner R. Curtis Doughty. There will also be one seat on the budget committee up for election as well.
The selectmen approved the dates unanimously.
