It’s all for a good cause. The Lobster Dip, an annual New Year’s Day event that brings hundreds of people to the beach for a quick run into the ocean, has been raising funds for Special Olympics Maine since 1989.
Organizers say last year the event raised more than $100,000. Proceeds benefit programs for Maine athletes with intellectual disabilities.
Those who haven’t already registered can register the day of the event from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at The Brunswick, 39 West Grand Ave. Individual dippers must raise at least $100.
Dippers line up at the beach behind The Brunswick and at noon, they all run into the ocean. Most come out of the water as fast as they go in, often running to a friend or family member who is ready with a dry towel. A few “double dippers” run into the ocean a second time.
Participants can sign up as individuals or part of a team. Some dress up in costumes.
A post-dip party will be held at The Brunswick, with free buffet, cash bar and music.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
