BRUNSWICK

Brunswick firefighters quickly extinguished a fire at a Brunswick motel Monday morning and saved the two story-structure.

The fire at Americas Best Value Inn at 215 Pleasant St. was reported at 8:08 a.m.

“We got very lucky here,” said Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant Monday, once the fire was out, and praised crews for their teamwork.

The temperature was approximately 3 below zero.

Firefighters found heavy smoke conditions on the first and second floor of the two-story building that is part of the motel.

There was a fire inside a room on the first floor that firefighters extinguished. The fire, however, had moved through the ceiling into a second unit and was pushing its way to the second story.

“We’ve got four units with fire damage,” Brillant said. “They were able to get in and get it knocked down quick before it got any further than that cluster, and it didn’t get into the attic.”

Guests were evacuated from the building. One guest was evaluated by rescue personnel, possibly for smoke inhalation, according to Brillant.

Brunswick was assisted by crews from Freeport, Topsham, Bath and West Bath.

Brillant said Brunswick firefighters and police are investigating the cause of the fire.

While on scene of this fire, Brunswick firefighters were called to a chimney fire on Pennellville Road. Brillant said there had been a number of fires overnight in the Midcoast area, including in Bowdoin, Wiscasset, Durham, Lewiston and Woolwich.
