“Winter is come in earnest and the snow In dazzling splendor … Spreads a white world All calm …Fancy’s pliant eye delighted sees a vast romance displayed.”  John Clare

February is on the way. Wrestling with cabin fever we are keeping winter company with all of the month’s special days. And what does February hold? February is full of surprises.

Behind closed doors February provides us with entertaining and nostalgic memories, especially exchanging valentines.

My soul soars as we are planting love in the hearts of those close to us. Also we had valentines for all our schoolmates and of course there was a special one for teacher. What wonderful memories! Feel the beauty of this passage that greatly inspires me. I don’t know who wrote it.

Think freely. Smile Often. Tell those that you love that you do. Rediscover old friends. Make new ones. Hope. Grow, Reach out. Pick some flowers. Share them. Keep a promise. Laugh heartily. Let someone in. Hug a child. Slow down. See a sunrise. Listen to rain. Trust life. Have faith. Enjoy! Make mistakes. Learn from them. Explore the unknown. Celebrate life. Cold, wet, snowy days of February remind me of many things.

Mostly I think of patriotism and our founding fathers. Glancing back most American homes and schools observed the birthdays of Mr. Lincoln and General Washington. The only two American presidents honored with a national birthday. General Washington on Feb. 22 and Mr. Lincoln on Feb. 11. The love of American history was instilled in us at school and at home. We admired those who served our country.

Another way history came alive was with celebrations retelling of American folklore. Of course we have all heard of honest Abe, cherry pie and Lincoln Logs.

As the winter winds keep howling I wonder what the Founding Fathers would think of today’s America.

What would they think of our local and Federal governments? What will the future hold for our children and grandchildren? Will they be free happy and prosperous? Many historians, scholars and philosophers have written about the future of our nation.

February always makes me think about history. In the final letter written by one of America’s greatest founders, Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration of Independence states, “that all men are created equal, and they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and pursuit of Happiness.”

America is the greatest nation on earth and our law makers must protect what God has blessed us with.
