ORONO — The University of Maine scored three goals in the second period, then held on for a 3-1 win over Massachusetts on Tuesday night at Alfond Arena.

Canon Pieper, Peter Housakos and Emil Westerlund each scored in the second period to lead the Black Bears, who improved to 12-9-2 overall and 6-6-1 in Hockey East. Jeremy Swayman had 33 saves for Maine.

Jake Gaudet scored for UMass in the third period, while Ryan Wischow had 14 saves for UMass (10-10-1, 4-6-1).

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 5, COLBY 1: Chris Jones scored twice and Ryan Bloom had two assists as the Nor’easters (13-3-2) beat the Mules (7-8) in a non-conference game in Waterville.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 56, CURRY 45: Sam MacDonald scored 14 points, Kristie McNall had 12 points eight rebounds, five steals and four assists, and the Nor’easters (11-3, 7-1 CCC) outscored the Colonels (9-7, 5-4) 20-9 in the third quarter to get the win in Milton Gymnasium.

BOWDOIN 88, HUSSON 58: Abby Kelly had 21 points and Maddie Hasson added 18 points as the Polar Bears (16-0) downed the Eagles (7-7) in Brunswick.

Lydia Caputi finished with 10 points for Bowdoin, which built a 41-19 lead in the first half.

Kenzie Worcester led Husson with 19 points, followed by Joan Overman and Sarah Bragg with 10 points apiece.

ST. JOSEPH’S 82, MOUNT IDA 45: Kelsi McNamara had 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting and 10 assists, and the Monks (14-1, 7-0 GNAC) jumped out to a 53-21 lead at halftime to beat the Mustangs (8-6, 1-4) in Standish.

BATES 62, UM-FARMINGTON 44: Nina Davenport had 21 points with 12 rebounds as the Bobcats (7-11) handled the Beavers (4-10) in Farmington.

Emily Freedland and Julia Middlebrook each added 11 points for Bates, which led 20-11 after one quarter.

COLBY 72, PINE MANOR 40: Haley Driscoll scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists as the Mules (7-7) rolled past the Gators (5-11) at Wadsworth Gymnasium in Waterville.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BOWDOIN 90, HUSSON 87: The Polar Bears (11-4) went on a 20-8 run in the first five minutes of the second half and held off the Eagles (10-4) in Bangor.

Jack Simonds led Bowdoin with 29 points, connecting on 5 of 7 of his 3-pointers. David Reynolds added 21 points.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 100, CURRY 72: Alex Kravchuk had a game-high 23 points on 10 of 12 shooting, Ryan Matthews added 15 and the Nor’easters (6-9, 4-4 CCC) cruised past the Colonels (1-15, 0-9) at Katz Gymnasium in Milton, Massachusetts.

Daron Hoges Jr. and Gavin Dibble each added nine for UNE.

ST. JOSEPH’S 71, MOUNT IDA 67: Ian Mileikis scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half – 16 of in the final 11:41 – as the Monks (9-6, 4-2 GNAC) rallied to beat the Mustangs (8-3, 2-3) in Standish.

St. Joseph’s trailed by as many as five midway through the second half, but took the lead for good at 62-61 on a free throw from Darian Berry with 2:21 left. Berry added 14 points.

(3) PURDUE 78, WISCONSIN 50: Vincent Edwards scored 21 points and Carsen Edwards added 20, leading Purdue (18-2, 7-0 Big Ten) to a blowout over Wisconsin (9-10, 2-4) at West Lafayette, Indiana.

Ethan Happ had 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Badgers. Wisconsin has lost three straight – all on the road.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UNE 3, BOWDOIN 2: The Polar Bears (7-4-1) scored two goals over a span of 1:58 in the second and third periods to break a 1-1 tie and defeat the Nor’easters (6-6-5) in Biddeford.
