Corinne was born Corinne Esther Edwards in Rockland, in 1933, the daughter of Corinne (Howard) and Edwin Edwards, the founder and longtime owner of Edwards Ice Cream. The youngest of four siblings, Corinne resided in both Rockland and a summer home at Crescent Beach, on Owls Head. She attended Rockland public schools, worked at her father’s ice cream factory, and graduated from Rockland High School in 1951, where she met her husband, John “Jack” Harrington Stevens, Sr.
Corinne then attended Lasell Junior College, in Newton, MA, and transferred a year later to the University of New Hampshire, where she majored in Secretarial science, and was a member of the glee club. She had a life-long love of music, both as a singer and a piano player, and once sang in a choir that performed with Arthur Fielder and the Boston Pops. Corinne married Jack in 1954, and they both graduated with BA’s from UNH in 1955. The newly married couple lived in MA and Indianapolis, IN, while Jack served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned second lieutenant.
In the late 1950’s, Corinne settled in Bristol, CT, after Jack left the Army, where she worked as a medical secretary and he worked as an engineer for New Departure, a division of General Motors. Corinne gave birth to two boys, John H. Stevens, Jr., and William “Bill” E. Stevens, in 1959 and 1961 respectively, and by the early 1960’s she stopped working outside the home to focus on being a full-time mother. The family moved to Keene, NH, in 1966 where Jack worked for many years at Miniature Precision Bearings, while Corinne raised her sons.
In 1978, the family moved to Brunswick, Maine, to be closer to their families, and where Jack worked for Bath Iron Works until his retirement. They built a house in 1979 off Church Road, and lived there until Jack’s death in 2008. Corinne then moved back to Rockland a year later to be near friends and family, and spent her final years in assisted living in Camden, and then Falmouth.
Corinne loved gardening and bird watching, and was especially fond of pistachio ice cream. She is survived by her sister, Nathalie Nicholas, of Owls Head; son John, of Seattle, WA; son Bill of Freeport and his wife, Julie Chen, and three grandchildren: Aaron Stevens of Freeport, Nathaniel Stevens who attends NYU, and Olivia Stevens who attends Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, her brothers, Howard Edwards, Sr., and Edwin R. Edwards, Jr.; her sister in laws, Barbara Edwards, and Vivian Edwards; and daughter in law, Melanie Mavrides.
A memorial will be held in Rockland at a date to be determined in May, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Maine.
