Some students at Sherwood Heights Elementary School in Auburn don’t run screaming outside at recess. Instead, they pull out their yoga mats and work on their meditation and flexibility.

Certified yoga teacher Emma Samson volunteers to teach a group of girls who would rather do yoga than play outside on the playground.

“It is so much fun,” sixth-grader Ari Guay said. “Now I feel more comfortable doing yoga in front of people.”

Samson said she has heard from teachers that the girls are more calm and relaxed after their recess yoga session.

“I never thought I could get elementary kids to meditate,” Samson said. “They love it.”
