
With winter weather due to hit the Midcoast region at midday, local schools and municipalities were canceling or cutting short plans for today.
A winter storm warning is in effect through 11 p.m. today.
According to the National Weather Service, a fast moving low pressure system was expected to spread snow rapidly across Maine and New Hampshire later this morning. The snow will become heavy at times this afternoon and early evening before ending late. Forecasts show the Midcoast could see 8 inches to a foot of snow.
Most area schools announced plans of early dismissal due to the snow forecast for today.
Regional School Unit 5 announced early dismissal times. Pownal Elementary, Durham Community School and Morse Street were to dismiss students at noon. Mast Landing students were scheduled to be dismissed at 12:05 p.m., Freeport Middle School at 10:55 a.m. and Freeport High School at 11:05 a.m.
In addition, today’s scheduled RSU 5 board of directors meeting has been canceled.
Brunswick schools also had early dismissal. Brunswick High School and REAL School dismissed students at 11 a.m.; Brunswick Junior High School at 11:15 a.m., Harriet Beecher Stowe at noon and Coffin School at 12:10 p.m.
School Administrative District 75 planned to use a half-day schedule today, meaning students were to be released at approximately 11 a.m. at Mt. Ararat Middle School and Mt. Ararat High School; and at approximately noon at the elementary schools. There was no late start for SAD 75 today as a way of making up time already missed this school year.
Regional School Unit 1 has no late start and also announced an early dismissal. Bath Middle School planned to dismiss students at 10:57 a.m.; Morse High School at 11:05 a.m. and all other RSU 1 schools at noon.
West Bath School has no late start, with school beginning at 8:25 a.m. and students being released at noon.
Other cancellations
In Brunswick, the Marine Resources Committee meeting scheduled for tonight had been canceled.
Bath’s regular city council meeting scheduled for tonight has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers.
The Woolwich Town Office will close at noon today.
Bowdoinham and Richmond food pantries will be closed.
Maine Legislature public hearings and work sessions scheduled for this afternoon are postponed.
