Two programs for teens are coming to Patten Free Library:
Drawing Workshops
Cartoonist and professional illustrator Vance Bessey will offer two art workshops for teens at Patten Free Library on Friday, Feb. 23: “Drawing Manga Style” from 10-11:30 a.m., followed by “Create an Anime Cel” from noon to 1:30 p.m. Both workshops are free for students in grades 6-12 and students may register for one or both.
“These workshops are samplers of full-length courses I have previously taught.” Bessey said. “My great love is teaching the skills, knowledge and tricks of the trade to up-and-coming cartoonists, animators, and illustrators.”
Bessey will share some of his work and demonstrate techniques such as form, light, shadow, proportion, inking, and character design. Participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own work, if available. The workshops are open to beginners as well as more advanced students and will be held in the library’s Community Room. Registration is requested and light refreshments will be served.

Cooking class
Patten Free Library and Now You’re Cooking will present a cooking class for teens from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Feb. 21, in the kitchen of Now You’re Cooking, 49 Front St., Bath.
Learn how to make delicious, homemade corn tortillas with a fresh salsa and then snack on what you cook up! Now You’re Cooking is generously giving a free tortilla press to each participant. The class’s teacher, Louisa Edgerton, is eager to share with teens her love of healthy cooking.
“Homemade tortillas are much more delicious than store-bought ones,” she said. “With the press, it’s easy to make a batch of tortillas so you can warm one in the microwave anytime you want a quick, yummy snack.”
Open to teenagers in grades 7-12, pre-registration is required because space is limited to eight participants. Registrants must reside in the library service area and hold a valid library card.
To register, contact the Library at (207) 443-5141, ext. 12, or [email protected]. us.
