The energy at Biddeford Ice Arena was high as the sixth-seeded South Portland/ Freeport/Waynflete boys hockey team faced No. 3 Biddeford in a Class A South quarterfinal on Tuesday.

A goal by the host Tigers 21 seconds in did little to quell that energy.

However, the Red Riots hung in, even leading 3-2 in the second period, before Biddeford scored four unanswered goals for a 6-3 victory.

The Tigers (13-6) will face No. 2 Falmouth in the semifinals at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday, looking for a third straight win against the Yachtsmen. The Red Riots finished with a 10-8-1 record.

“It was a fun hockey game, but it was penalties that killed us and our power play wasn’t very good. The guys battled,” said Red Riots coach Joe Robinson after his squad finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage and allowed two power-play goals.

Tied 2-2 in the second period, the visitors grabbed their only lead when Aidan Schifano whipped a wrister past Biddeford goaltender Owen Sullivan (17 saves) for a shorthanded goal.

But, Biddeford, which failed to score on its first two power-play opportunities, tied the game 15 seconds later when Nick McSorley slipped a shot past Red Riots goaltender Liam McGibbon, who was a game-long standout while turning aside 32 Tiger shots.

“He is only a sophomore, and our sophomore class is a lot for us to look forward to,” said Robinson.

momentum of its home crowd, striking right out of the gate. Trevor Ouellette and Logan Magnant worked a 2-on-1 break, with McGibbon sprawling to make a

skate save. However, the rebound stayed in the slot, with McSorley cleaning it up for a 1-0 Tigers lead. “That goal was unfortunate because Liam made a

great save on that play, everyone is behind the net and the next closest guy is at the blue line,” said Robinson.

Biddeford kept coming,

forcing McGibbon to make several point-blank saves. McGibbon had 10 stops in the opening period and watched his team tie it late in the frame. Owen Patrick gained control of a loose puck and passed to Eric Walker, who made a move before slipping the puck past a prone Sullivan with 7.1- seconds remaining in the first.

South Portland/Freeport/ Waynflete carried the play early in the second period, but it was Biddeford that grabbed a 2-1 lead as Ouellette buried a shot off a pass from Trenton Ouellette.

The Red Riots struck right back, with Bradley McMains firing a shot underneath the crossbar, and when Schifano tallied the go-ahead goal, the No. 6 seed had a 3-2 edge.

But, Biddeford struck on two straight power plays, with Trevor Ouellette scoring for the second time for a 4-3 Tigers edge after two frames.

In the third period, Biddeford pressured for a two-goal lead, but McGibbon made six straight saves, including a post-to-post blocker stop on a point-blank try by Tyler LaFlamme.

However, the Tigers did score the next goal as Colin Petit banked a shot into the cage, followed 30 seconds later by a Magnant goal and the 6-3 win.

Playing their final game for the Red Riots were seniors Will Armstrong, Tyler Campbell, Caleb Rowland, Max Winson and Jake Poole.

“They don’t quit. We have a lot of talent, but a lot of it is young. The older guys grind for the whole 45,” said Robinson. “I am very proud of the entire team. They battled and I am excited about the future.”
