
She was born Feb. 21, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Dr. Harold and Margaret Stuart Stevens.
Joan attended Tabor Academy and graduated from Northfield School for Girls (now Northfield Mt. Hermon), Colby Junior College and Boston’s Children’s Hospital School of Nursing.
Joan worked as a Registered Nurse for many years. She took time off from nursing to raise her family,
Growing up Joan enjoyed sailing, swimming and ice skating. Joan loved animals and had several beloved dogs that held a special place in her heart. She loved playing scrabble and spending time with her family.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Fred Gross in 1991, son Steven Gross in 2009 and brother Prescott Stevens.
She is survived by a son Douglas Gross of Houston, Texas; a daughter Carolyn and her husband Paul Meadows of Saco; a sister Anne and her husband James Mitchell of Portland, Oregon; and two grandchildren Katherine and Oleg.
The family would like to thank the staff at Seal Rock for their care and compassion over her past six years.
No formal services are planned. Dennett Craig and Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main St., Saco is respectfully handling the arrangements.
Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to any animal welfare organizations of your choice.
