Waynflete takes regionals in JA business competition

The team from Waynflete School was a regional winner at the Junior Achievement of Maine 12th annual Titan Challenge for high school students across the state Feb. 28. The business competition pitted teams of three high school students against each other as they attempted to manage a virtual company in a competitive marketplace.

Bodhi Small, Matt Beard and Ben Fratoni and other regional team winners were awarded Amazon gift cards. Overall winner Yarmouth High School – Michael Guertler, Zach Mogul Campbell and Oliver Sullivan – received scholarship money from the MES Foundation. 

Junior Achievement is an international organization that teaches students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy. The 2018 event matched nearly 300 students with mentors from local businesses across the state. 

Portland student-poet slams competition 

A Deering High School junior came out in front at one of two Poetry Out Loud Regional Finals last month. Allan Monga was named the Southern Maine Regional Champion at the finals, and rounding out the top 10 for the Southern division were:  Abbie vanLuling, grade 12, Gorham High School; Richard Hilscher, grade 12, North Yarmouth Academy; Emma Lombardo, grade 11, Westbrook High School; and Wyatt Bates, grade 11, Yarmouth High School.

In addition to the 1o finalists from the Northern division, the local students will compete at The Maine Poetry Out Loud state finals March 14 at the Waterville Opera House.

After three rounds of competition, one finalist will be named the overall winner and advance to the national competition, where they will compete for a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends, as well as a $20,000 scholarship.
