BRUNSWICK

A fire heavily damaged a Brunswick couple’s home on Mere Point Road on Sunday afternoon, drawing firefighters from as many as a dozen towns.

Upward of 50 firefighters responded, and Mere Point Road was closed to traffic until nearly 4 p.m.

Brunswick Deputy Fire Chief Don Koslosky said firefighters were called to 1036 Mere Point Road just after 1 p.m.

“It’s just been a stubborn fire for us,” Koslosky said, noting that a live electrical line delayed efforts to extinguish the blaze. “The wind coming off of the bay has increased the fire.”

Shuttling water in with multiple tankers, it took firefighters a couple of hours to bring the fire under control.

Koslosky said the home sustained significant damage but it’s not a total loss. The two-story ranch house was insured and no injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was providing assistance to homeowners, Sara Caron and Steve Vachon, who were away visiting family with their dog when the fire broke out.

Brunswick Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Emerson said it was not suspicious, and that the cause involved electrical components on the exterior of the building.
