The Portland Sea Dogs announced Friday that they will extend the netting that protects fans from foul balls for the upcoming season.

The netting, which is being installed by Safe Approach Inc. of Poland, will extend to the end of Section 114, which ends just before the visitors’ bullpen in left field, and angle down in a triangular shape to the end of the dugout on the first-base side.

The team also will replace the netting behind the plate.

Produced with advanced technology, the netting is knotless and contains a durable black fiber with a green coating that allows for 95 percent spectator visibility.

The Sea Dogs will open their 25th home season April 13 against Binghamton.

YANKEES: New York put Aaron Hicks on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right ribcage in the latest injury to one of their outfielders.

The Yankees made the move a day after Hicks got two hits in a season-opening 6-1 win at Toronto. Hicks, who played the entire game, felt soreness between his third and fourth at-bats, General Manager Brian Cashman said.

BLUE JAYS: Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery Monday to remove bone spurs from both heels and is expected to miss eight weeks, General Manager Ross Atkins said.

The bone spurs have bothered Tulowitzki during his recovery from surgery to repair the ligament damage suffered when he stepped on C.J. Cron’s foot while trying to beat out an infield hit in a game last July against the Los Angeles Angels. Tulowitzki hasn’t played since.

BRAVES: Atlanta put catcher Tyler Flowers on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique and prepared to be without him for a few weeks.

Flowers sustained the injury Thursday on a swing in his first at-bat of the season in Atlanta’s 8-5 win over Philadelphia. He couldn’t complete the at-bat and headed straight to the clubhouse.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL started the season with its most players born in Puerto Rico since 2011.

Nineteen players on opening-day rosters were born on the island, an increase of three from last year, the commissioner’s office said.

MIKE EVERITT, the plate umpire, left a game between Detroit and Pittsburgh after being hit in the mask by a pitch.

The game was delayed a few minutes in the eighth inning because of the injury.

TIGERS: Ron Gardenhire was ejected from his first game as the Detroit manager after a replay review overturned what would have been the winning run in the 10th inning.

Gardenhire was tossed for the 74th time overall in his career.
