KENNEBUNK — Two fugitives from New Mexico were found in Kennebunk and arrested on outstanding warrants on Wednesday.

Authorities from the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department in New Mexico contacted the Kennebunk Police Department late Wednesday afternoon and informed officers that two fugitives from New Mexico, Alfred Luckett Jr. and Christine McCarthy, were possibly in Kennebunk, said Kennebunk Police Lt. Eric O’Brien.

Police found the couple Wednesday night at a house they had been renting on Port Road, said O’Brien. O’Brien was unsure how long they had been living in Kennebunk.

Both Luckett, 72, and McCarthy, 70, were arrested on outstanding warrants for resisting/evading or obstructing an officer, failure to appear and contempt of court. The two were also charged with being fugitives from justice, said O’Brien.

The couple was transported to York County Jail in Alfred and will be extradited to New Mexico, said O’Brien.

According to New Mexico court documents, the charge of resisting, evading or obstructing an officer was related to an incident on Sept. 26, 2017.

The couple was court ordered in March 5, 2013, to pay back rent owed on a home owned by Michael and Kay Coughlin, according to a March 2013 article from the Albuquerque Journal.

According to a summons filed on Sept. 26, 2017, in Santa Fe County Magistrate Court, Cultural Assets LLC, owned by Luckett, had been ordered by the court to pay $772,000 to the Coughlins. Luckett was ordered to not to remove any items from eight storage units he rented and the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Department was later ordered to seize art and artifacts from the storage units, according to the summons.

Police found the storage units empty and were unable to locate Luckett, according to the summons.

The charge of contempt of court was related to events that occurred on Oct. 16, 2017, according to court documents.

McCarthy failed to make a court ordered appearance on March 13, 2018, and Luckett on March 15, 2018, according to court documents.
