The Portland Sea Dogs began their 25th season on Thursday night, but it was Binghamton having all the fun, defeating Portland, 6-0 on opening night at NYSEG Stadium in Eastern League action.
Binghamton scored all six of its runs in the first two innings off losing pitcher Teddy Stankiewicz. Peter Alonso brought in the first runs of the season with a two-run shot.
Later in the first with two outs, Tim Tebow blasted a three-run homer on the first pitch of his initial Double-A at-bat.
In the second inning, Jeff McNeil capped off the scoring with a solo homer to right field.
Drew Gagnon cruised through six scoreless frames on two hits to notch the win for Binghamton.
Portland had four hits on the night, receiving two singles by Tate Matheny in his Double-A debut. Esteban Quiroz doubled and Josh Tobias added a single.
Portland’s bullpen pitched four scoreless frames. Trey Ball and Matt Kent each fanned three and didn’t allow a hit over two innings apiece.
