FREEPORT

Firefighters from four towns responded to a barn fire Saturday afternoon in Freeport.

The fire was reported at 3:42 p.m. at 62 Fernald Road. Freeport Fire Chief Charles Jordan said crews arriving on the scene found the burning barn had already caved in on itself.

Though, which he said belonged to Angelina Toothaker, barn couldn’t be saved, a nearby structure was spared.

No one was hurt as a result of the fire. Animals at the residence — including chickens, ducks and an escaped pig that firefighters had to catch and get back in its pen — were also unharmed.

Jordan said the approximately 20-foot-by-30-foot barn contained about 50 bails of hay. and a riding lawnmower near the barn was destroyed.

Due to the extent of damage, the cause of the fire can’t be determined, Jordan said, but there was nothing suspicious about the scene.

He said it appeared a person did try to put the fire out themselves before calling the fire department. That is never a good idea, Jordan said.

“Get us on the road,” he said.

When people try to extinguish fires themselves, Jordan said, it can lead to a delay in firefighter response, which can not only increase the amount of damage, but also lead to injury or death.
