Movie

April 13

The public is invited to see the movie “Young@Heart” hosted by the Age-Friendly Community group on April 13, at 2 p.m. in the Public Safety Building 1443 Roosevelt Trail (Rt. 302). The documentary tells the story of a choir whose average age is 81. To prepare for a show in their hometown that is only weeks away, the seniors must learn a slate of new songs, ranging from James Brown to Coldplay.

Music

“Girl in Six Beats” will premiere Saturday, April 21, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Corthell Concert Hall, USM Gorham Campus. The 30-minute opera is a saga of discovery for a teenage girl, whose feeling of voicelessness has prompted her to attempt to take her own life and was commissioned by Opera Maine and created in collaboration with The Telling Room. The show will travel to two local schools (home to some of the students who created the libretto), to be performed for their students.

An invisible 6-foot rabbit named Harvey is making his stage debut at Schoolhouse Arts Center April 13-22 .  The show, “Harvey,” is directed by Chris Roberts and assistant directed by Hollie Pryor. “Harvey” performances are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 and Sundays at 2:00.  This is a hilarious comedy for the whole family. The Dana Packard Saco River Theater will present “Educating Rita,” April 20-29 at 7:30 p.m. and on April 22 at 2:30 p.m. at 29 Salmon Falls Road, Bar Mills, ME. In “Educating Rita,” Rita (Jennifer Porter) a witty and down-to-earth working-class hairdresser from Liverpool, in a courageous break for personal freedom, signs up for an adult education class and finds herself under the grudging tutelage of Frank (Dana Packard) a cynical, alcoholic English professor. April 14 and 15

The Maine Mineralogical and Geological Society Gem Show, hosted by St. Joseph’s College will take place on Saturday, April 14 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 15 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Alfond Center of the Sebago Lake campus in Standish, Maine. This is the 35th annual MMGS Show and the biggest in the state. It features renowned local and international vendors, one-of-a-kind mineral specimens, fossils, meteorites, gemstones, and engaging educational programs and kids’ activities.

Westbrook Woman’s Club will host the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs District 1 Art Show on Saturday, April 21, at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. In attendance will be the winning art students from Brunswick, Gorham, Research Club of Limerick, 21 Club of Kezar Falls, and Westbrook Woman’s Club. Judges will pick three top winners and their number one selection will go to the state convention. A light lunch costing $10 per person will be served.
