The Rams got off to a slow start despite controlling the tempo in the opening minutes. Kennebunk pushed Falmouth into its own zone in the early going but was unable to put the ball in the cage.
Kennebunk finally got on the board 8:29 into the contest when Lily Schwartzman scored. It would take the Rams nearly 12 more minutes to get their second goal when Erin Gorton scored to double the Kennebunk lead to 2-0.
The Rams took off from there, scoring three more goals in the final four minutes of the half and extending their lead to 5-1 at the break.
“We started telling them that we had to start sending double cutters on the side that was wide open. We finally drew it for them and said, ‘it’s going to work, we need to go,’ and that’s when it started,” said Kennebunk coach Annie Barker of what kickstarted the Rams’ offense.
Kennebunk came out hot in the second half and put up two more goals in the opening five minutes. The Yachtsmen were able to slow down the Kennebunk attack in the final 20 minutes, but the Rams managed to get three more goals and wrap up the win.
Gorton led Kennebunk with five goals and forced three turnovers.
“Erin had a great game today, a really solid game. You know we didn’t win many of the draws but (she) caused turnovers and things that helped us get that far,” said Barker.
Brie Beaudette added three goals for Kennebunk while Hallie and Lily Schwartzman each finished with one score each.
Caitlyn Camelio scored twice for Falmouth while Kayla Sarazin scored once.
Barker was excited to see her club earn another victory over a tough Falmouth team, and felt that it was a complete game for her squad.
“We knew it was going to be a battle. We were mentally prepared and we knew we would need to stay composed because the styles were still the same styles,” said Barker. “We knew that we could get some good shots off, we knew that their goalie was new, Haley (Moody) really came up huge in the cage for us. Defense is our strength still, (we knew) if we could just limit their shots we (would) be OK.”
Barker has also been pleased with the young players’ performances, especially Lily Schwartzman on offense and Emily Archibald on the defensive side.
“The impact that they have made so far is amazing,” said Barker. “They understand the game, they see the field, they get the whole picture. They’re quiet leaders right now but they’re going to turn into amazing leaders and players as you can see already. This was their second varsity game and look what they’re doing.”
