DAYTON — Construction is underway for a roundabout at the intersection of Routes 5 and 35 in Dayton.

The $2.5 million Maine Department of Transportation project is funded by state and federal money and is intended to improve the intersections of  Routes 5 and 35, Hight Road and Clarks Mills Road.

The intersection is located in the center of town, alongside the only gas station in town and near the town offices and elementary school.

The project has been in the works for several years, and an MDOT engineer at a 2015 public meeting called the intersection “a high crash area.”

According to data from MDOT, in 2012 there were 11 crashes at the intersection resulting in eight injuries.

Town officials stated on the town of Dayton’s website that the project is slated to be completed by July 17.

Paving was occurring in the area Friday, and town officials were advising people to seek alternate routes or expect delays.

Town officials will be posting updates on the town’s Facebook page.
