Preservationist will give tips on family heirlooms

Framer and preservationist Leia Scotton will head a “Preserving Your Family Heirlooms” workshop at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Brick Store Museum at 117 Main St.

Attendees may bring in family treasures, and Scotton will suggest how to preserve them. Admission is free to members and $5 for all others. Proceeds go to the Brick Store Museum.

Ex-ambassador gives talk on U.S., Afghan diplomacy

The Association of Former Intelligence Officers will host a talk by American Academy of Diplomacy president and former ambassador Ronald Neumann at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brick Store Museum’s Program Center at 4 Dane St.

Formerly a deputy assistant secretary of state, Neumann served as ambassador to Algeria, Bahrain and Afghanistan and is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He also served in Baghdad with the Coalition Provisional Authority.

Neumann will focus on issues in American diplomacy with the U.S. and Afghanistan. This may include policy goals and strategies in Afghanistan along with the risks, timelines and the roles of al-Qaida and the Islamic State. A question period will follow his presentation.

Church hosts ‘That’s Amore!’ dinner, with Italian songs

The “That’s Amore! Italian Concert and Spaghetti Supper” will begin at 4 pm. Saturday at Christ Church, 6 Dane St.

Children’s Water Festival includes quiz show, skits

More than 700 Maine fifth- and sixth-grade students and their teachers will gather for a day of interactive learning about clean water and the environment at the 23rd annual Southern Maine Children’s Water Festival, to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sullivan Gym, University of Southern Maine Portland campus.

The event will help students develop a sense of environmental stewardship through activities such as Dripial Pursuit, a quiz show on water issues with VIP hosts; an interactive skit from Ferry Beach Ecology School; and a tour of the exhibition hall, where displays include a fly-tying practice, live aquatic plants and animals, and a bacteria testing station.

Master Gardener’s sale offers seedlings, perennials

The 24th annual Cumberland County Master Gardener’s plant sale will be held, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Barron Center, 1145 Brighton Ave.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers will help people select plants and answer questions on how to care for them. Selections include native and pollinator plants, in addition to vegetable seedlings, herbs, perennials, shrubs and annuals. The event offers gently used gardening items, the annual Master Gardener calendar raffle, strawberry shortcakes, blueberry tarts and coffee. Proceeds from the sale support community projects and educational programs, as well as the Children’s Garden at the UMaine Gardens at Tidewater Farm.

The Naples Lions Club invites veterans and their families to a Memorial Day cruise on the Songo River Queen II from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on May 28 honoring their service in the U.S. military.

Veteran attendees are asked to bring an ID or documentation to show active or prior military involvement. Boarding begins 30 minutes before departure. Complimentary appetizers and desserts will be provided. A snack bar and cash cocktail bar also will be available on board.

Open houses offer details about nutrition programs

The York County Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program will host open houses at three separate clinics this month. Attendees can meet WIC staff and learn about federally funded nutrition programs.

The first event will be held Tuesday at the WIC Sanford office at 6 Spruce St., with additional open houses planned for May 22 at 15 York St., Building 9, Suite 2, in Biddeford and May 31 at the Kittery Recreation Department at 120 Rogers Road, East Wing in Kittery. All events will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Guests will receive vegetable seeds for planting, and refreshments will be available.

WIC is a health and supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women; breastfeeding women up to 12 months postpartum; non-breastfeeding women up to 6 months postpartum; and infants and children up to 5 years old who have a medical/nutritional risk and meet financial eligibility criteria.
