In an effort to see how our schools stack up, The Times Record compiled the following information about how many students are in each school, as well as school nurses and other staff members that work to meet their health needs.
Brunswick School Department
Brunswick has total of 2,337 students, and four registered nurses for a 584- to-1 student-to-nurse ratio. The breakdown by school is as follows:

“I meet with the nurses and her monthly, so the nurses consult with her,” she said.
The district also has guidance counselors in each school — one each at Coffin and Harriet Beecher Stowe elementary schools, two at Brunswick Junior High and four at Brunswick High School. There also is a social worker in the schools funded by Sweetser.

The breakdown by schools is as follows:

• Bowdoinham Community School — 162 students
• Harpswell Community School — 157 students
• Williams Cone Elementary School — 250 students
• Woodside Elementary School — 319 students
There are three registered nurses that serve the five elementary schools; with a total of 1,096 students among the five schools, that works out to a 365-to-1 student to-nurse ratio.
According to MSAD 75 Superintendent Brad Smith there is a health tech available when the nurses are not assigned to a particular school. The district also has 6.8 counselors and social workers on staff at the elementary level. Regardless of certification, Smith said they provide essentially the same supports to students in need.
• Mt. Ararat Middle School — 579 students, 1 fulltime nurse, 5 social workers and counselors
• Mt. Ararat High School — 708 students, 1 full-time nurse
“We have one full-time RN (at the high school),” said Smith. “In addition, the high school offers a 20-hour per week service with a school-based health center. There are two Sweetser social workers who provide social and emotion interventions through the School Based Health Center. Those are not school funded, and Sweetser bills those students’ families through insurance.”
Regional School Unit 1
RSU 1 has a total of 1,933 students and the equivalent of five-and-a-half nurses among its six schools, for a district-wide ratio of 351-to- 1.

According to Assistant Superintendent Cynthia Alexander, the district has certified nurse substitutes they pay in the event a nurse is unable to work.
There are 7.5 equivalent guidance counselors in the district — three at Freeport High School, one each at Freeport Middle, Mast Landing, Morse Street and Durham Community schools, and a half-time position at Pownal Elementary School.
Additionally, there is a full-time special education social worker at Durham Community School (grade pre-K to 8). There is also a full-time special education social worker at Freeport Middle School and on a parttime basis at Pownal Elementary School.
Morse Street and Mast Landing schools share one person who is a 0.3 full-time equivalent (12 hours) at each school. The proposed 2018-19 budget, however, would add a 0.25 social worker in regular education. There is already a half-time regular education social worker at Freeport High School.
Guidance counselors and social workers have some responsibilities in common, said Alexander, and others that are not.
“It’s more of a team approach when dealing with social or emotional issues and the people who are needed at the table are there,” she said. “I feel like we have pretty good supports here and I guess the bottom line is the principals are very good about looking at the needs they have and advocating.”
