PHIPPSBURG

With nearly 500 votes cast in the Phippsburg selectman race, former Town Administrator Michael Young eked out a victory over incumbent Selectman Julia House.

“It was a really super turnout … it’s probably one of the biggest turnouts we’ve seen,” said Young. “I think it just shows that there were two outstanding candidates running for selectman.

“I know it was a tough choice for a lot of the townspeople,” he added, “because both Julia and I have served the town in different positions over the years.”

House had been seeking a third three-year term, having been elected initially in 2012.

“I certainly have the utmost respect for her and am very thankful that she was in that position,” said Young. “She’s done so much for the town.”

Young previously served as town administrator for 21 years, before retiring in 2015. Young has also served on a number of committees, as well as holding other positions over the years.

As town administrator, Young was responsible for executing the wishes of the selectmen; he said he’s looking forward to taking a more active role in shaping Phippsburg’s future.

Alvin Toombs and Susan Levene were both reelected to the Budget Committee for three-year terms, with 283 votes and 332 votes, respectively. They were unopposed in their reelection bids.

Also running unopposed on the ballot, R. Curtis Doughty was reelected as road commissioner with 411 votes.

The business portion of Phippsburg’s annual town meeting will commence at 6:30 p.m. today at Phippsburg Elementary School. It will continue Wednesday at the same time and location, if necessary.
