GORHAM — Betty Scammon Dyer, 96, died Friday, May 11, 2018, in Gorham, Maine.
She was the daughter of Thelma and Harley Scammon, Sr. of Saco. She had lived in Saco and Naples prior to her time at Gorham House. She attended Saco schools and graduated from Thornton Academy. In both Saco and Naples she was an active community volunteer all her life. Her business career included work in several area businesses and 24 years at Bridgton Academy where she was honored as the recipient of the Ray T. McDonald Award for Distinguished Service and was inducted into the Bridgton Academy Hall of Fame in 2013.
After retiring in 1993, she was an ESL tutor for an Ethiopian family, a docent at the Portland Museum of Art and took many Senior College courses at USM.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 44 years, Laurence H. Dyer, daughter Pamela Dyer, and infant daughter Julia. She leaves sisters Jean Scammon Ilsley of North Carolina, Ann Scammon Grant of Scarborough, brother Harley Scammon, Jr. of Saco, daughters Gail Dyer of Gardiner and Susan Dyer Cole (Bruce) of North Bridgton, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., May 26, at the Twitchell Chapel at Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton.
