The Bowdoin College women’s lacrosse team failed to overcome an early deficit and saw its season come to a close in a 13-7 loss to The College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears ended a fantastic campaign with a record of 14-6.

The Lions (19-2) jumped to a 7-1 lead in the first 20 of minutes of play and it proved to be a deficit too large for the Polar Bears to overcome. After TCNJ notched the first three goals of the game, Katie Miller stopped the bleeding for Bowdoin with a goal at 22:40.

A pair of goals by Allie Gorman sparked a four-goal reply by the Lions, and TCNJ extended its advantage to as many as seven goals in the opening period.

Kara Finnerty and Hannah Hirschfeld kept the Polar Bears within shouting distance with goals late in the first half as the hosts held a 10-4 edge at the break.

Finnerty scored just 22 seconds into the second half, trimming the lead to 10-5. But TCNJ answered with the next three goals, pushing its lead to 13-5 with under 18 minutes to go.

Miller and Hirschfeld added late goals to close the final gap for Bowdoin.

The Polar Bears owned a dominant 16-6 edge in draw controls, but committed 23 turnovers. TCNJ held a 30-22 advantage in shots for the match.

Allie Gorman led all scorers with four goals for TCNJ.

Bowdoin was led by two goals and an assist apiece from Finnerty and Hirschfeld. Grace DeWald and Eliza Denious both had two caused turnovers for Bowdoin, while Morgan Pinado won five draws.

Elizabeth Morrison had five draws and four caused turnovers for the Lions.

Kayli Weiss (12 goals, four saves) played 35:19 in goal for Bowdoin before giving way to Erin Morrissey (one goal, five saves) over the final 24:41. Miranda Chrone made seven saves in net for TCNJ.

More Bowdoin honors

Six Polar Bears were honored with IWLCA All-Region Awards on Thursday.

Weiss, Hirschfeld and DeWald were first-team choices. Finnerty and Denious were also first team selections for the Polar Bears. Miller was recognized as a Second Team All-Region selection.

In women’s tennis, Bowdoin senior Tess Trinka has received a pair of prestigious honors in regional awards handed out by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week.

Trinka, a senior captain and No. 1 singles and doubles player for the Polar Bears this season, was recognized as the ITA Northeast Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award and the ITA Northeast Most Improved Senior Award.

Last week Trinka was named First Team All-NESCAC singles and doubles with Izzy Essi and qualified for this week’s NCAA Division III Individual championship beginning in Claremont, California.

Trinka went 17-8 playing at No. 1 for Bowdoin this season. At No. 1 doubles, Trinka and Essi went 12-9 as a pair.

And, the softball team picked up a pair of honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Senior Lauren O’Shea was named First Team All-New England in addition to her First Team All-NESCAC accolades handed out early in the month.. A second baseman, she led the Polar Bears to the NESCAC Championship Game with a walk-off hit in a win over Amherst in Game 5. She hit .388 and slugged .672 with 27 RBIs and 41 runs scored, while also stealing 19 bases.

Bowdoin senior Claire McCarthy earned Third Team All-New England recognition following her final campaign behind the plate for the Polar Bears. McCarthy was also named Defensive Player of the Year by the NESCAC and received All-NESCAC honors. McCarthy led the NESCAC in hits (52) and ranked fourth in the league in RBIs (33). In the field, she threw out six runners in nine stolen base attempts against her and contributed 21 assists.
