Foundation gives $20,000 for student empowerment

The KeyBank Foundation has donated nearly $20,000 to two student empowerment groups.

The foundation gave $9,500 to Falmouth High School’s Casco Bay Leadership Institute Program, which helps students build leadership skills. The participants are taught how to lead diverse teams. They also select, plan and lead community service projects.

The KeyBank Foundation donated $10,000 to The Telling Room’s Young Writers & Leaders program. The Portland nonprofit writing center for young writers ages 6 to 18 provides a number of literacy programs, including Young Writers & Leaders.

Rotary Club honors Lyseth volunteer’s years of service

The Portland Rotary Club recently presented Lyseth Elementary School with $500 on behalf of Rotarian volunteerism and service to Lyseth.

For the past four years, Portland resident Bob Traill has helped with literacy in the second grade, volunteering twice a week, listening and guiding students while they read to him. Traill is passionate about many things, but especially about encouraging young students to embrace the love of reading.
