An apartment building at 9 North St. in Westbrook was heavily damaged by a fire Friday night.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which broke out around 8 p.m., the Westbrook Fire Department said.

The fire started in the front of the two-story, four-unit wooden building, said Fire Capt. Mark Theriault.

The cause is under investigation by the Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Crews from Westbrook, Windham, Falmouth, Gorham and Portland worked together to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings, which were evacuated.

Nearby structures received heat damage.

The American Red Cross is helping nine families – totaling 22 people – affected by the fire.
