WATERBORO — On weekend mornings, you’ll likely see Lydia Wasina pouring coffee or dispensing doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts.
During the season, you’ve seen her on the lacrosse field, or playing field hockey — she’s a Massabesic Mustang.
And give her a few years, and this mathematics aficionado will be in the classroom, teaching your middle and high school sons and daughters or our grandchildren all about algebra.
Wasina, 18, lives in Waterboro, one of the six communities, along with Alfred, Limerick, Lyman, Newfield and Shapleigh, that make up RSU 57. She is a member of the Class of 2018 top 10 percent of students.
During her high school career, she’s taken advantage of a dual enrollment program that allowed her to take two credit classes a semester at York County Community College at no charge. Her classes have included art appreciation, science, chemistry, anatomy and an ethics class.
“More people should take advantage of them,” she said.
The classes she took through dual enrollment will give her a leg up when she departs for the University of Maine in Farmington in the fall, where she plans to study secondary education.
While it could reduce the number of credits needed to earn her degree, there is another benefit. Wasina plans to major in math and minor in coaching for hockey and lacrosse. Having earned some credit courses will free up time to concentrate on her coaching.
“My schedule won’t be so filled I can’t concentrate on the minor,” she said.
In addition to coaching, Wasina enjoys other classes, like U.S. history. But her passion is for math.
“I love math,” she said in a recent interview. “It is something different every time. There are the same concepts, but different answers depending on the numbers you choose. It’s always different. You need the foundation of how to solve the problem — then you have the freedom with the numbers.”
When she’s not playing sports or working, she hangs out with her friends and family — Wasina has a sister, Emily, 19, and a brother, Brady, 15, and she plans to work at Dunkin Donuts this summer.
Graduation is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cross Insurance Arena (former civic center) in Portland. Valedictorian is Elijah Stitson, salutatorian is Sara Woodward. Speakers include addresses from Superintendent Larry Malone, and Principal James Hand.
“(Graduation) is exciting, “said Wasina.
When she joins her peers on the stage — about 200 of them — and receives her diploma, it will be another step forward, towards her goal.
“I’m excited to keep moving,” she said.
