TOPSHAM

Selectmen have cleared up a confusing policy for election campaign signs.

In Topsham’s non-commercial sign regulations adopted last September, a provision for signs placed on road sides during election seasons had stated they could be placed October 1 for a general election.

That didn’t, however, take into account primary elections, which take place other times of the year.

So, selectmen made the change to the policy and signs are now allowed to be placed on public road sides five weeks before a general or primary election.

“This takes us back a couple of months,” said Town Manager Rich Roedner. “We put in specific dates and turns out that wasn’t really good for the November elections.”

The only change made was to the timing. As far as placement, which was unchanged, signs are allowed in the right of way, which extends beyond the edge of pavement to the back side of sidewalks.
