HARPSWELL
The Orr’s and Bailey Islands Fire Department is moving forward with installing a new state of the art ventilation system that will remove diesel exhaust from the station.
The new $45,000 Plymovement Diesel Exhaust System connects directly to the tailpipes of the department’s six diesel-powered vehicles, pumping dangerous exhaust fumes directly out of the building. The system automatically separates from the vehicles as they exit the building.
Without the system, exhaust fumes can build up in the station, making surfaces dirty and – more importantly – being inhaled into the lungs of volunteer firefighters.
Initially planned to be installed next year, the department opted to do so now after recent renovations to the facility will result in more people spending time at the building. It is expected to be installed by Aug. 10.
