BANGOR — Robert Lamar French, “Boats,” age 85, passed away on July 5, 2018, at the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine, as a result of a stroke.

Robert was born in Hackensack, New Jersey, on February 20, 1933. Robert was the fourth child of Jacob T. and Elizabeth French.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Jay T., Donald, and Bruce, and one sister, Shirley Zeegers. He also left behind two nieces, Colleen (French) Moreshead, of Windham, Patricia (French) Eaton, of Trenton, and a nephew, Garry “Rick” Zeegers of Naples, Maine.

Robert joined the United States Navy after graduating from high school. Robert made his career in the Navy. His military experience left him a Senior Chef, and Boatswains Mate. He is recipient of a Bronze star with combat “v”, Vietnam Campaign medal and Service medal. He also received two Purple Hearts during his term in Vietnam. He was awarded Navy Commendations, Combat Action Ribbon, and National Defense Good Conduct Medal.

After retiring from active service, he served at Brunswick Naval Air Station for twenty years before retiring in 1993.

His successful military career can be attributed to his strong work ethic, and impeccable personal character. Bob was, as well, a generous man. Often helping those in need by making regular donations to the Children’s Clef Palate Foundation and funding Christmases for area families in need.

He will always be remembered for his fun-loving personality and his many years on Lead Mountain Pond. He will be sadly missed by family, friends and all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, from 5-7 p.m. at Lindquist Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yarmouth.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the American Heart Association, 51 US Route 1, Suite M, Scarborough, ME 04074.
