BRUNSWICK

An elderly woman and a teenager were airlifted to hospitals Tuesday afternoon after being trapped in a car that crashed in Brunswick.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. on Route 1 northbound about a mile beyond Cook’s Corner. Brunswick police say a 2010 Lincoln MKZ drifted off the road into the median and struck a large tree.

Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said both occupants were pinned inside the vehicle. He called West Bath firefighters to respond with additional extrication equipment and estimated it took about 45 minutes to free the occupants.

According to Brunswick Police Cmdr. Tom Garrepy, the car was driven by Shirley Anderson, 86, of Naugatuck, Conn. She was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious injuries.

The passenger was a 15-year-old female from Nevada. She was flown to Maine Medical center in Portland with serious injuries.

Both LifeFlight helicopters that transported the patients landed on the northbound lanes of Route 1. The road was shut down for approximately an hour and traffic was redirected through Cook’s Corner.

Brunswick police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
