KENNEBUNK— Geologist Jon Dykstra will discuss the geological changes in the southern Maine area at the Kennebunk Free Library on Monday, July 23, at 6 p.m.

From upstate New York, Dykstra, now a Kennebunkport resident, focuses his discussion on the evolution of the Kennebunk area’s rocks and rock formations. The southern Maine coast, specifically the Kennebunk area, has history of going through different geologically drastic events to change what is there today. From the continental drift to the substances on the Atlantic ocean floor, Dykstra will go over the land’s transition over time and rocks that currently exist. While discussing the formation of area mountain ranges and other events, Dykstra will display samples of common rocks found in the nearby.

Dykstra’s received his doctorate in 1978 from Dartmouth, focusing on geologic applications of satellite remote sensing. During his career, he’s primarily focused on processing digital satellite images and has many years of experience with different institutions. Between 1978 and 1987, Dykstra worked for the Earth Satellite Corporation (EarthSat) in Washington, D.C., and later returned as the vice president of Research and Development from 1997 to 2015. From 1987 to 1997, he joined the Intergraph Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama, as an executive manager for software development and as the director of Research and Development for the Space Imaging Corporation. Currently, he is an active member of the Board of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust and serves as the treasurer of the Maine Mineralogical and Geological Association.

The July 23 program is free and wheelchair accessible. The Kennebunk Free Library is located at 112 Main St. in Kennebunk,.
