SANFORD — Hazel Lloyd Tuttle, 93, of Sanford and Little River, South Carolina, died July 10 at her home in Little River surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on September 12, 1924 in Dover, New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Ralph and Amy (Price) Lloyd.

She was predeceased by her loving husband John Lawrence Tuttle, Sr. after 48 years of marriage, and was also predeceased by her sisters Maxine, Claudine, Marguerite and Agnes.

She was a beautician for over 50 years.  She owned and operated Hazel’s Shoreline Beauty Shop for 38 years in the Goldenrod Building at York Beach.  After closing the shop, she continued her profession in her front porch beauty salon.  Her customers from York treasured their relationship with her so much that they followed her to Sanford where she gave them 1940 prices and a hotdog for lunch.  Their visits were more of a social event than just having their hair done.

When the kids were of school age, she was a treasurer for Longfellow Elementary School PTA for a total of six years and worked closely with the then-president Nancy Titcomb.

Hazel was very active in her children’s sports interests.  Besides attending their matches, she would also help in transporting her son’s wrestling team and brought them home after many a practice.

Her father, Ralph Lloyd, was the youngest of 13 children where they lived in Caribou.  He figured he wasn’t going to get much of the farm, so they moved to southern Maine for the warmer winters.  You would have to be from there to understand that.

Hazel was the most wonderful and loving mother God ever created.  She told her children to never think they were better than anyone else and to always do the right thing.  She never carried any airs about her, she was the most genuine, kind hearted and welcoming person you would ever be so lucky to meet.

Longfellow writes “that good women all remind us we can live our lives sublime departing leave behind us footprints on the sands of time.”

Rest in peace Nana.

Mrs. Tuttle is survived by her children, John Lawrence Tuttle, Jr. and his wife Ann, James Patrick Tuttle and his wife Mihoko, Jane Ellen Tuttle-Liston and her husband Robert, four grandchildren Meghan S. Tuttle and her fiancé Wesley T. Gardner, John David Tuttle Cook, Erika A. Tuttle, Camden Edward Liston, one great grandson, Soloman Hayes Gardner, two nieces Alicia D. McIntire and Judith Donnell and nephew Richard Hatfield, and well as many grandnieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church in Sanford.  Burial will be in New Town Cemetery in Rollinsford, New Hampshire.
