BATH — Shirley Ann Stewart, 89, of Bath, Maine died on July 23, 2018 with her family by her side. She was born on December 15, 1928. In Waltham, Mass. She was the daughter of the late William and Esther Smith.

Shirley and her late husband, Ronald, settled in Portland, ME and raised their four children. Shirley also enjoyed a career in the financial office at the University of Southern Maine. Shirley and her husband retired to Wilton, ME in 1987 and in 2000 they relocated to Bath to be near their daughter, Nancy and her family.

A big part of Shirley’s life, in Bath, was her involvement with the Neighborhood United Church of Christ. There, she worked with the Good Samaritan Program and baked cookies for Sunday services, as well as knit prayer shawls for community members. She was an avid knitter and enjoyed painting and gardening.

Shirley, (“Mom”, “Grammie”< “Mimi”), was an exceptionally kind, strong and giving person, who loved and cared for all of her family. She is survived by her four children, Judith Cosenza of Avon, CT, Gordon Stewart and his wife Dawn of Deer Isle, ME, Nancy Cloutier and her husband Robert of Bath, and Douglas Stewart and his wife, Debra, of Keene, NH; her fourteen grandchildren, Matthew and Marcus Cosenza of Avon, CT, James “Gordie” Stewart and his wife, Zori, of Athens, OH, Meredith Stewart of Chadds Ford, PA, William “Hardy” Stewart and his wife Birdy of Berkeley, CA, Cameron, Cole and Ross Stewart of Deer Isle, ME, Kristin Cloutier of Yarmouth ME, Nicole Leopin and her husband Casey of Topsham, ME and Erin and Emma Stewart of Brattleboro, VT; three greatg randchildren, Boden and Violet Leopin of Topsham, ME and James “Jamie” Stewart of Athens, OH; and four brothers, Lee Smith and his wife Joan of Seattle, WA, Barry Smith of Portland, ME, Jeffrey Smith and his wife Betsy of Swanville, ME and Judson Smith and his wife Becky of Portland, ME; plus many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High Street, Bath, Maine beginning with a wake, Friday, August 3, 2018 from 4:00 – 6:00pm and a funeral service at noon on Saturday, August 4, 2018. A reception will be held at the Neighborhood United Church of Christ at 798 Washington Street, Bath following the funeral.
