LISBON

Lisbon residents will weigh in tonight on a proposal to give ATV riders access to several public roads in town.

One of the main changes would allow ATV riders to come off the trails and use a portion of Wing Street to reach Route 9 to get to the Route 196 intersection. A public hearing is set for 7 p.m. tonight at the Lisbon Town Office.

The switch would allow riders access to gas and other services along Route 196. At a previous meeting, councilors discussed whether the town should install signs to warn that ATVs would be operating on the shoulder of Route 9.

The town first put in an ATV ordinance to allow access routes on public ways in November 2017. ATV riders are largely dependent upon property owners allowing them to pass through their land. The access is permitted for ATV’s in town June 1-Oct. 31.

Also on the agenda, the Lisbon School Department is exploring the possibility of a performing arts center at the high school. The school committee is seeking approval to use up to $15,000 to pay for a concept design and project cost estimate. The department has its sights set on the former gym as a performing arts center.

The money would come from existing funds, taken out of the school’s capital reserve fund. The fund currently has $55,550.

“As you know, using the Capital Reserve Fund has allowed the Lisbon School Committee to utilize existing money without having t increase the taxpayer’s local share,” Superintendent Richard Green wrote in a memo to councilors.
