HARPSWELL — Barbara A. Skolfield Barton, age 88, died Wednesday August 22, 2018 at Maine General Hospital, Augusta.

She was born August 13, 1930 in Lewiston the daughter of George R. and Lila Johnson Allen Skolfield. She attended Brunswick schools and was a graduate of Brunswick High School, and University of Maine, Orono. She married Richard Ladd Barton May 26, 1950 in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Mr. Barton died in 2009.

She learned her passion for teaching from her mother and first taught Sunday School at First Parish Church, Brunswick. She began teaching in the one-room North Harpswell School House, later continuing her calling at Coffin Elementary School, Longfellow Elementary School, and as a Language Arts teacher at the Brunswick Junior High School. Mrs. Barton retired in 1984.

She was a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her friends and family knew her as fun-loving, always enjoying the company of others, entertaining and travel. She and her husband spent many years enjoying the Virgin British Islands, especially Tortola.

She is survived by her two daughters, Linda-Lee Barton and Nancy-Ann Barton, both of Harpswell; a grand-daughter Kimberlee A. Skolfield Dietlin Gould (Nathaniel) of Brunswick; a grandson, John Allen Dietlin of Brunswick; a great-grandson, Jordan Allen Gould of Brunswick, and her beloved cat Squwaky.

Interment next to her husband in Pinegrove Cemetery, Brunswick will be performed privately. The family invites all who can attend to a memorial service 11 am Friday August 31, 2018 at the Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick.
