Naples man hurt
in weekend crash
NAPLES — A Naples man was seriously injured Sunday night when he failed to stop at a stop sign and ran his car off the road.

Patrick Connolly III, 48, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight after he crashed his 2003 Chevrolet at the intersection of routes 302 and 11 around 9 p.m. Sunday. He was driving on Route 11 when he ran the stop sign and struck an embankment, according to police.

Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, according to Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the crash.

USM offers program
to assist veterans
PORTLAND — The University of Southern Maine is offering a first-of-its-kind program that helps veterans prepare to become first-time college students.

Veterans Upward Bound provides free, one-on-one resources, including advising, mentoring and tutoring, along with practical assistance in filling out financial aid forms and college applications.

The Veterans Upward Bound program is being funded by a $264,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The year-round individualized assistance can take place online or in person and veterans can apply to any school, not just USM. Call 780-4627 or email  [email protected] for more information.

Community Chorus
seeks more singers
BRIDGTON — The Lake Region Community Chorus, embarking on its winter session, will hold its first rehearsal Monday, Sept. 10, at Bridgton Academy’s Twitchell Chapel.

The group, made up of about 55 members from 14 surrounding towns in the Lakes Region, welcomes new altos, tenors and basses, but is especially in need of sopranos. Auditions are not required. Programs are made up of a variety of pieces from many musical genres and styles.

Rehearsals are from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday evenings. Registration begins at 6  p.m. Sept. 10 and there is a $25 registration fee that helps cover the cost of the music. New members can also register on Sept. 17. Concerts are  scheduled for Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. Contact Jan Jukkola for more information at [email protected] or 647-2584.

board members

BRIDGTON – Loon Echo Land Trust elected members to its Board of Directors at its recent 31st annual meeting, held at the Bridgton Historical Society’s Peabody-Fitch “Narramissic” Farm in South Bridgton.

New members joining the board are Carrye Castleman-Ross, Melissa Rock and Sven Cole, all residents of Bridgton.

Re-elected to the board were Sheila Bourque of Raymond, Connie Cross of Casco, Karen Eller of Bridgton, Bob Gowdy of Denmark and Weston, Massacusetts, Carol Sudduth of Denmark and Dick Lemieux of Raymond.

Retiring members Ed Friedman, Allen Erler and Norm Nicholson were recognized for their years of service to the conservation efforts on behalf of the seven communities served by Loon Echo Land Trust.

Standish resident Paul Vigeant photographed this early morning visitor to the back deck of his Birch Forest Drive home. The photo of the adult bear was taken from an upstairs window. The bear also returned later in the day, Vigeant said.
