BRUNSWICK
A fire damaged a home at 304 Maine St. Monday morning, displacing the family who lives there.
The fire was reported just before 11 a.m.
No one was hurt. According to Brunswick Fire Department Captain David Hunter, the homeowner was burning weeds with a propane torch which sparked the fire. She was on the opposite side of the house when a neighbor spotted the flames.
The homeowner and a dog were outside. There were three cats inside the house found safe.
There was heavy damage to the front corner of the home where fire got into the wall, and smoke damage throughout. According to the town’s online assessing database, the home is owned by Shannon Banks and Laura Gagnon.
“They’ll be displaced for a while,” Hunter said.
Firefighters were able to draw water from a nearby hydrant. With temperatures reaching upwards of 87 degrees, the weather presented a challenge, Hunter said. They had the fire out in about 15 minutes.
Firefighters responded from Freeport and Topsham to help. Crews cleared the scene shortly before 1 p.m.
The family did not request assistance from the American Red Cross. The home is insured, Hunter said.
Neighbors said the homeowners had done a lot of work on the home recently.
