SACO— There were no injuries and minimal damage to a two-story garage during a fire on Lincoln Road in Saco on Monday.

The couple who own the garage, located near their home, were asleep when the fire broke out.

“At 6:38 a.m. some one woke me up pounding on the door,” said Nancy Beaulieu of 10 Lincoln Road. It was a neighbor who came over to notify the couple that there was a fire in their garage, which sits a short distance from their house.

Nancy went outside in her pajamas to see what was happening, and her husband, Reynold, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, came out “huffing and puffing.” A nearby resident had called 911, and with the help of neighbors, cars were moved away from the garage.

“The neighbors were very helpful,” said Nancy.

The power was turned off, and the couple made due with a mobile phone and a back up oxygen system for Reynold, and within a few hours the power was restored to the home.

“Thank God,” said Nancy, that no one was injured.

The couple said the garage contained storage space for clothing and other objects including materials and items Nancy used for her previous job as a nutrition educator.

Deputy Fire Chief David Pendleton said there was minimal structure damage and some personal items were destroyed.

It was “a smoldering fire” without large flames, Pendleton said.

As of Monday morning, the cause of the fire was undetermined. Pendleton said it may have been caused by faulty electrical system, an animal such as a mouse or squirrel chewing through electrical wires or a kerosene heater that might have automatically turned on Sunday night due to cold temperatures.
