The Williams College football team racked up 476 yards of total offense en route to a season-opening 41-6 win at Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon.

The Ephs (1-0) extended their winning streak to six straight games over the Polar Bears (0-1).

Williams jumped to a 31-0 halftime lead and never looked back, riding the strength of quarterback Bobby Maimaron, tailback TJ Dozier and receiver Frank Stola to victory. After trading early possessions, Dozier took advantage of a short field for Williams and scampered 20 yards for a touchdown at 8:50 of the opening

After a three-and-out by Bowdoin, Maimaron capped a six-play drive with a 38-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 after one period.

Back-to-back touchdown passes from Maimaron to Frank Stola made it 28-0 Williams on consecutive possessions midway through the second quarter. A late turnover by Bowdoin led to a last-second field goal by the Ephs to make it 31-0 at the break.

Maimaron capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown plunge to make it 38-0, and first-year kicker Andrew Schreibstein booted a 17-yard field goal late in the third to give the visitors a 41-0 edge.

Bowdoin got on the board with a 16-play, 81-yard drive in the fourth quarter as Griff Stalcup found Michael Cloppse on the sideline for an 11-yard scoring strike to close out the scoring.

Maimaron rushed for 73 yards and passed for 146 for Williams, scoring two rushing touchdowns and throwing for two more for the Ephs. Dozier ended with 128 yards on the ground, while Stola caught eight passes for 82 yards and two scores.

Bowdoin was led by 78 yards rushing on 18 carries by Nate Richam. Stalcup caught three passes for 36 yards and also tossed for 64 yards and a touchdown for the Polar Bears.

Defensively, Bowdoin was led by 12 tackles from Liam Doughtery and 10 from Joe Gowetski. Kevin Chen had his first career interception.

Bowdoin heads to Vermont this upcoming Saturday to play Middlebury at 1 p.m.

Field hockey

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Bowdoin remained perfect with a 2-0 win behind a pair of Emma Stevens goals against Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (4-0, 3-0 NESCAC) notched their first shutout of the season against the 2-2 (0-1 NESCAC) Cardinals.

Eight minutes into the game, Nikki Gerjarusak charged into the Bowdoin circle and forced Maddie Ferrucci to make a play on the ball.

Stevens scored in her third consecutive game to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead midway through the half. Tala Glass recorded the assist as Stevens tipped in her initial bid.

The Polar Bears struck again two minutes later with another Stevens tally. Beth Koeller fed Stevens with a long pass and the junior buried the ball in the bottom right corner of the cage.

Bowdoin outshot the Cardinals by a 21-7 mark and held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Ferrucci made three saves to earn the shutout. Delaney Wood made six stops for Wesleyan.

Bowdoin plays at Husson on Tuesday evening, beginning at 7 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

LEWISTON — Bowdoin rolled to its seventh straight win to open the season on Saturday, dusting off Bates, 3-0, at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears moved to 8-0 (2-0 NESCAC) and have won 24 of 25 sets to open the year.

Bates led by as much as 11-8 in the first set, and the score was tied at 19-19 before the Polar Bears went on a 6-2 run to earn the first game. Sydney Salle’s kill gave Bowdoin a 23-20 lead, and Kate Kiser won Bowdoin’s 23rd final two points with kills from her setter position.

In the second set, Bowdoin pulled away from a 5-5 tie, using consecutive aces by Sophia Pahl, and kills by Caroline Flaharty and Danielle Abrams to forge a 10-6 lead. Bates failed to get closer than two for the rest of the set.

The third set was another close one to its midway point. Bates trailed 13-12, but Bowdoin put together a 5-1 run to make it 18-13, beginning with a kill and a solo block by Salle and ending with consecutive Bates errors, prompting a timeout. A pair of kills by Flaharty and another by Abrams gave the Polar Bears a commanding 21-14 lead.

Abrams finished with a match-high 12 kills and just one attack error for Bowdoin.

On Friday against Colby at Waterville, Bowdoin rolled to another 3-0 victory, with set scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-16.

Bowdoin heads to Tufts for a big NESCAC match this upcoming Friday at 7 p.m.

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Polar Bears cruised to a season-opening win at Roger Williams on Saturday afternoon, 66-7.

Bowdoin stands at 1-0 after its debut and will play its home opener on Saturday at Pickard Field against Colby.

Bowdoin raced to a 33-0 halftime lead and never looked back in the victory.

The Polar Bear defense proved well-organzied and the forward supported well in loose play and set pieces as Bowdoin got off to a great start.

Hard running by centers MacKenzie Philbrick and Allegra Bersani produced five assists, while Bowdoin’s athleticism out wide resulted in five tries being scored by the back three.

Alice Hawkins and Sophia Karris led Bowdoin with two tries each on the afternoon. Liz D’Angelo notched a try and had eight conversion kicks in the win. Taylor Yoder, Jackie Jacques, Claire Carges, Molly Petronzio and Bersani also scored tries.

Damani Singh led the defense with ten tackles on the day.

Men’s soccer

MIDDLETON, Conn. — Bowdoin dropped a 2-0 decision to Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears fell to 2-3 (0-2 NESCAC). The Cardinals picked up a win in their first conference game of the season (2-2, 1-0 NESCAC).

Wesleyan jumped ahead 4:06 into the game as Mike Gallo took advantage of a defensive breakdown to put the hosts ahead.

The Polar Bears looked for an equalizer, but the Wesleyan defense denied four back-to-back opportunities.

The Cardinals doubled their tally in the 24th minute as James Schubauer headed a shot into the back of the net.

Moctar Niang nearly put Bowdoin on the board in the 79th minute, but watched as his header soared just wide.

Bowdoin outshot Wesleyan by a 15-9 mark and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Chris Franklin made five saves for the Cardinals. Owen Wolfson made three stops for Bowdoin.

Bowdoin plays at Middlebury this upcoming Saturday at noon.

Women’s soccer

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Bowdoin surrendered a goal in each half as the Wesleyan Cardinals pinned a 2-0 setback on the Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon.

At the 29:29 mark, Liz Young put the Cardinals up 1-0 with a goal that just slipped past the hands of Bowdoin’s Sabrina Albanese.

With less than eight minutes to go in the game, Lauren Goetzman rifled the ball into the top right corner of the net, making it 2-0.

Bowdoin looked to mount a comeback with two shots from Aine Lawlor and Sophia Lemmer in the final minutes, but Wesleyan denied the bids.

Wesleyan held a slight 15-13 edge in shots and 7-5 corner kick advantage. Albanese made seven saves. Zoe Cassels-Brown made four stops.

Bowdoin bounced back on Sunday, rolling to a 7-0 win over UMaine-Farmington at home.

The Polar Bears improved to 2-2-1, while the Beavers fell to 0-7.

Bowdoin held a 42-3 edge in shots. The Polar Bears earned 10 corner kicks in the game, while surrendering zero.

Bowdoin plays at Middlebury on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Women’s golf

BANGOR — Bowdoin won its third consecutive Maine Intercollegiate Golf Association championship, running away from the field to take the crown at Bangor Municipal Golf Course this weekend.

The Polar Bears ended with a two-day score of 693 to win the tournament by 35 strokes over Husson (728) and third-place Bates (762).

Caroline Farber again won medalist honors, shooting a 72 on Sunday to finish at 150 (78-72, +8) for the tournament. Emme McCabe was also outstanding, firing a 77 on Sunday to finish in second place at 157 (80-77).

Haley Baldwin (189, 9th), Brynne Wicklund (197, 11th) and Lindsey Bi

ndra (205, 13th) rounded out the Polar Bear competitors.

After dominating Maine competition the first two weeks, Bowdoin will head out of state this upcoming weekend to compete in one of the region’s top events — the Mount Holyoke Invitational at the Orchards Golf Club.

Men’s golf

BANGOR — The Polar Bears finished ninth at the 2018 Maine Intercollegiate Golf Association championship hosted at Bangor Municipal Golf Club this weekend.

Bowdoin improved 20 strokes from day one to day two in order to take the ninth-place showing.

Tom Dunleavy led the way for the Polar Bears, shooting a 78-77-155 to finish in 25th place individually.

Reed Foehl went 81-78-159 to take 35th spot, followed closely by Gavin Shilling (85-79-164) in 43rd place. Jackson Harrower and Michael Donovan both finished with two-day scores of 165 to finish in a tie for 45th place.

Bowdoin heads to Massachusetts Saturday and Sunday for the Williams Invitational, hosted at Taconic Golf Club.
