WATERBORO — A strong first quarter led the Sanford football team to their fourth straight win, a 47-6 victory over rival Massabesic on Friday night.
“The last time Massabesic played, they played Bonny Eagle and it was a really competitive football game. They made a lot of big plays and we knew it was going to be homecoming here and that we needed to come ready to play. I was really pleased with the energy that we got here with and what we played with. It’s always fun to play our rival and have a result like that,” said Sanford head coach Mike Fallon.
Sanford (4-2) opened the scoring early in the first quarter.
At the 9:11 mark, the Spartans were positioned on the two-yard line. Sanford quarterback Xavier Levine passed the ball to James Meggison who would find the end zone. Ethan Shain’s extra point attempt was good to produce a 7-0 score.
“We got the opening kick and we were able to drive the football down the field. I think we set a physical tone with our offensive line play,” said Fallon.
Two minutes later, the Spartans scored again. At the 7:11 mark, Shain broke away for an 84-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.
With a little over three minutes left in the first quarter, the Spartans would score again. At the 3:20 mark, Meggison carried in his second touchdown of the night — this one from 16 yards out.
“That’s James Meggison, he’s a senior and a captain. He runs really hard and he’s a good-sized kid. He has the ability to wear people out. We worked real hard getting him going, if he has a little bit of space he’s going to be dangerous and he was tonight,” said Fallon.
The extra point attempt was blocked by Nick Roberge to produce a 20-0 score.
At the 8:09 mark in the second quarter, the Spartans were at the five-yard line. On a fourth down, Levine threw the ball to Matthew Romano in the end zone to extend the Spartan’s lead 27-0.
Levine would add another rushing touchdown later in the quarter to make it 34-0.
“If you can run the football like that it just opens your offense wide open. Xavier, our quarterback, is really just developing and getting better every single week. Now we’re heading for week seven and he sort of trying to play as a veteran,” said Fallon.
With time winding down in the first half, Shain scored his second touchdown of the night and made it 40-0.
With seconds left in the first half, the Mustangs (0-5) would score as Owen Roberts found the end zone on a 1-yard run.
During the third quarter, Meggison produced his third and the final touchdown of the night. Levine would connect with Meggison for a 33-yard touchdown pass.
“We executed really well but now we have to look at next week. Deering is coming to Alumni Stadium. We need to get another win. We had a goal tonight and we accomplished it. Now, we’re going to move on to the next one,” said Fallon.
Sanford will host Deering on Friday night. Massabesic will host Bangor on Saturday.
