Brunswick – Evelyn Sterry Belanger of Rossmore Road, Brunswick, died 10/3/2018 at Horizons Center for Living and Rehabilitation after a long illness.

She was born on January 23, 1925, in Skowhegan, Maine, daughter of Frank and Lena Worthen Sterry.  She graduated from Skowhegan High School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1941.  She received a B.A. cum laude from Colby College in 1945 and an M.A. in French from Middlebury College in 1952.  She was a member of Phi Mu Sorority, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, and Powder and Wig Drama Club.

She taught foreign languages at Foxcroft Academy and Brunswick High School.  Following marriage to Adrien L. Belanger on July 10, 1954, in Brunswick, she continued her teaching career at Van Buren Girls’ High, Old Orchard Beach High School, Williams and Messalonskee High School in Oakland, where she was Year Book Advisor and later, Librarian.

In 1980 after 30 years of teaching, she and her husband moved to Brunswick.  She worked as Reference Librarian at Patten Free Library in Bath until retiring in 1994.  She continued volunteer work at Brunswick High School library for several years.  Evelyn Belanger was talented at knitting, crochet and needle work.  She enjoyed having a pet cat and had a total of 19 cats during the course of her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her husband on January 20, 2002.  Survivors include a daughter, Susan and her husband Ross D. Bartlett of Limington, three grandchildren, Jennifer Bartlett and her husband, Josh Hart, Ross W. Bartlett and fiancé, Natasha Stankiewicz, and Rebecca and her husband, Nicholas Duquette; and four great grandchildren, Grady and Gavin Hart and Zoey and Oscar Duquette; cousin Jonas Worthen of Mercer and his family and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be October 12, 2018 from 10:00am to Noon at Demers-Desmond Funeral Home, 34 Cushing Street, Brunswick.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 132 McKeen Street, Brunswick, at 12:30pm.  Burial will be in Maquoit Cemetery, on Maquoit Road in Brunswick, followed by a luncheon reception at St. Charles Church.
