Brunswick-Joanne Wales Carroll, 81, of 30 Meadowbrook Rd., passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 27, 2018.

She was born on December 1, 1936, to Alice and Wallace Wales in the town of Limerick.  Joanne graduated salutatorian of her class from Limerick High School.  She then went on to the University of Maine in Orono where she received both her BA and MA degrees in history and education before entering the teaching field.  While at Orono she was on the Dean’s list and was active in the Newman Club, the intramural basketball team, the Glee Club, as well as an active member of the AOPI Sorority.

Joanne taught school in the Brunswick Public School system and at Saint John’s Parochial School for many years after which she worked at LL Bean in both Portland and Lewiston where she rose to the rank of team leader.  In 1986 she was awarded the Bean Pride Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the company.  Upon her retirement from LL Bean, she and she alone was honored at the Auburn Country Club in a room filled to capacity with her fellow workers and supervisors.  This acknowledgment was one of the highlights of her career.

Joanne had many wonderful traits, the most salient was to capitalize on the positive qualities in a person.  She truly liked people and accepted everybody with a smile.  As a result, her training techniques at Beans were truly exceptional as she had an enormous amount of patience and understanding, attributes which she developed over the years from teaching school.

She had several avocations, three of which were cooking, gardening, and reading.  It was not unusual for her to put on the radio and hum along to her favorite songs while preparing Coquilles St. Jacques or some other French Dish.  She was also a very prolific reader, and very frequently she would have as many as three books going at the same time.  They included mostly historical novels but detective stories were also to her liking.  Joanne was also very proficient at making floral arrangements for the house with flowers picked from their many beds in her backyard.

Joanne and Ron also did a great deal of traveling.  They went to Hawaii, St. Martins, Bermuda, Bahamas, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Africa and Austria.  However, their favorite place of all was England which they visited on many occasions.  They always stayed at the Russell Square Hotel, located around the corn from the British Museum.  Bernie, the matre’d, would always welcome them with open arms, as well as Denise, the owner of their favorite restaurant down the street.
