In a story appearing in Saturday’s Journal Tribune, organizers of the Maine Lighthouse license plate initiative have proposed to have the cost of their speciality license plate paid for by donors to the Maine Lighthouse Trust. Kristen Schulze Muszynski, Director of Communications for the Maine Department of the Secretary of State, says the trust is not permitted to take the pre-paid approach that they proposed. Muszynski said that according to the Maine specialty plate law, the money must come from each pledged applicant, so the lighthouse trust cannot have a single donor pay a lump sum to cover multiple plates, as they have proposed.
