BIDDEFORD — Trailing 16-13 at the end of the first quarter, the Thornton Academy girls basketball team used a big second quarter to take control as they cruised to a 49-36 win over rival Biddeford on Tuesday night.
Katrin Dumont put on a show for TA as she scored a team-high 15 points — all on 3-pointers — to help steer the Trojan’s comeback.
“We haven’t been shooting the ball particularly well in the first eight games and that certainly changed tonight. I just can’t say enough about the performance Katrin Dumont had with I think five threes. Penelope Giorgi hit a couple of big shots. Elise Hebert was incredible on the boards, offensively and defensively,” said TA head coach Eric Marston.
The first quarter was dominated by Biddeford’s Gracie Martin, who scored all 16 points for the Tigers.
“The whole team did a great job guarding Grace Martin, who’s one of the best players in the state — that’s a tall order. We were taking turns on her individually, but collectively the team was guarding her,” said Marston. “She got off to an unbelievable start with the first 16 points for her team. I was really proud of the way we responded.”
The Trojans would turn the tide in the second quarter, outpacing Biddeford 13-4 thanks to a combined 11 points from Dumont, Giorgi and Hebert.
“We started out really well. We had a lot of intensity, moved the ball really well to start. Sometimes though when you make a few shots in the start, you forget about rebounding, pounding the glass and driving it in. I think that happened to us a little bit in the second,” said Biddeford head coach Katie Herbine.
The Trojans came out faster in the third quarter with Dumont leading the way with a pair of threes and Giorgi chipping in five points.
“We had a six-point lead at the half and we didn’t want to come out and play tentatively and not lose. We wanted to come out and really attack. I was really pleased with the way the girls did that,” said Marston.
The Trojans and Tigers played an even fourth quarter as both squads scored eight points. TA’s dominant third quarter performance led them to the win.
“All the credit to (Thornton Academy). They shot so well tonight. If they keep shooting the ball like that, they’re going to get some big wins,” said Herbine.
Giorgi scored 12 and Hebert scored 10 in the win for the Trojans.
Biddeford was led by Martin, who finished the game with 24 points and Taylor Wildes added 10.
The Trojans improved to 2-7 on the year, while Biddeford drops to 2-6.
Thornton Academy will host Bonny Eagle and Biddeford will travel to Westbrook on Thursday.
