The puck had dropped on the girls’ hockey playoffs, wrestling’s regional championship meet will be held Saturday and conference titles in indoor track, skiing and swimming are also on tap.

And if that’s not enough February excitement, the boys’ and girls’ basketball tournament will be underway this time next week.

Here’s an overview of the week that was and a look at the drama that’s to come.

Girls’ hockey

The girls’ hockey postseason is underway, but no local teams qualified.

Brunswick finished 2-15-1 and seventh in the North Region, but only six teams qualified. The Dragons finished with a 4-2 home loss to Edward Little/Leavitt.

The Mt. Ararat/Morse co-op squad ended up 3-14-1 and eighth in the North following a 4-3 win at Gorham/Bonny Eagle and a 2-0 loss at Winslow/Gardiner.

Boys’ basketball

The boys’ basketball regular season ended Thursday and all three Mid-Coast squads are playoff-bound.

Brunswick was 8-8 and sixth in the Class A South Heal Points standings entering Tuesday’s game at defending Class AA champion Edward Little following a 69-53 home win over Lincoln Academy and a 60-56 loss at Leavitt. The Dragons closed at Mt. Ararat Thursday.

The Eagles was 9-7 and eighth in Class A South after a 56-49 win at Lewiston last week. Mt. Ararat was at Medomak Valley Tuesday and closed at home versus Brunswick Thursday.

Morse was clinging to the ninth and final spot in Class A South at 4-12 entering Tuesday’s home game versus Cony. The Shipbuilders lost at home to Maranacook (76-55) and beat host Leavitt (79-68) last week. Morse closed at Camden Hills Thursday.

The boys’ basketball playoffs begin with preliminary round games on the home courts of the higher seeds next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Brunswick appears destined for the No. 2 seed in Class A South behind defending Class A South champion Greely. The Dragons improved to 15-1 after a 56-25 win at Lincoln Academy last Wednesday. Brunswick was home with defending Class AA champion Edward Little Tuesday, then closed at Mt. Ararat Thursday.

Mt. Ararat was 8-8 and sixth at press time following last Thursday’s 55-46 home win over Lewiston. The Eagles were home with Medomak Valley Tuesday and finished the regular season at home Thursday versus Brunswick.

Morse fell to 0-16 and 13th in Class A South (where just nine teams make the playoffs) after losses last week at Maranacook (60-48) and at home to Leavitt (42-34). After playing at Cony Tuesday, the Shipbuilders finished the season at home versus Camden Hills Thursday.

The boys’ hockey regular season still has a couple weeks remaining.

Brunswick was 7-7 and fifth in Class B South after Saturday’s 5-0 home loss to defending Class B South champion Greely. The Dragons went to Kennebunk Wednesday.

The Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon/Hyde co-op team was 6-7-1 and fifth in Class A North entering Wednesday’s contest at Windham/Westbrook. After visiting Lake Region Thursday, the squad is home versus Edward Little Saturday. 

Indoor track

The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference indoor track championship meet is Saturday in Brunswick.

Swimming

In the pool, Morse swept Belfast last weekend, as the boys prevailed, 89-81, and the girls won, 100-70.

Team results for Brunswick’s meet with Cony weren’t available.

The KVAC championships will be held this weekend.

Wrestling

The Mt. Ararat/Brunswick wrestling team finished a fabulous regular season with a record of 24-2, while Morse went 17-11.

At last weekend’s KVAC meet, Mt. Ararat/Brunswick was a close second to Camden Hills while Morse placed sixth.

The regional meet is this weekend.
