Dorothy (Dottie) Mae Johnson, 91 of Brunswick, passed away Sunday, March 17th, 2019 peacefully at Thornton Hall.
Born in Washburn, WI, on May 6th, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Meta Marie (Hockendanner) Johnson. She grew up on a farm in the Washburn area and graduated from Washburn High School, where she was homecoming queen.
On June 6th, 1947 she married the love of her life, the late Kenneth Johnson. Together they embraced life to the fullest. She was a supportive Coast Guard Military spouse following her husband to several different stations and finally settling in Waterford, Connecticut. They loved to travel both overseas and throughout the US. They enjoyed square dancing and making friends everywhere they went. Upon retirement, they split their time seasonally between Florida and their Connecticut home. After the passing of her husband, Dorothy moved to Maine to live with her daughter and son-law.
Dorothy loved to do crafts, bake, and write beautiful letters. She never missed an opportunity to remember her family and friends on their special occasions.
She worked at Bellin’s Pharmacy in New London, CT and at Sears in both New London and in Brunswick, ME. She also enjoyed several summer seasons working at the gift shop at Thomas Point Beach and particularly enjoyed working the annual Bluegrass Festival.
In recent years, Dorothy enthusiastically attended sporting events and dance recitals of her great-grandchildren and took trips to Massachusetts and Connecticut to visit family and friends. She loved special occasions and celebrations, and took joy in daily calls to her long-time best friend, Filomena Vessey.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Kenneth who died in 1992, as well as sisters Katherine Carlston and Esther Divine, and a brother, Joel Johnson.
She is survived by two children, daughter Linda Rapoza and her husband Michael of Brunswick, ME, and son Jim Johnson and his wife Lucy of Milford, MA; seven grandchildren, Shari Elder and her husband Steve of North Yarmouth, ME, Sonya Morrell and her husband Jeff of Harpswell, ME, Brian Rapoza and his wife Barbara of Brunswick, ME, Robby Johnson of South Windsor, CT, Becky Nevelos and her husband Dan of Vernon, CT, Jordan Johnson of New York, NY, and Lisa Johnson of Milford, MA; nine great-grandchildren, Cameron Morrell and Meagan Ouellette, Brandon and Brittany Morrell, Alexis Elder, Kendra Elder, Tanner Rapoza, Gracie Morrell, Jonathon Nevelos, Ian Nevelos and Liam Rapoza; and one great-great grandson, Maddox Morrrell.
The family would like to thank the superb staff of Mid Coast Senior Health Center-Thornton Hall and CHANS Home Health & Hospice for the care and comfort shown in these last months.
Visiting hours will be held at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street in Brunswick, Maine on Thursday, March 21 from 4- 7 pm, and a Celebration of Life will be held at Brackett Funeral Home on Friday, March 22 at 11:00 am. A private burial will be held at the Maine Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.
